“The Love of the Redeemer” - Ruth 4

INTRODUCTION.

The whole story wrapped up in the word Redemption.

Ruth 4:1–10 NASB95

1 Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and behold, the close relative of whom Boaz spoke was passing by, so he said, “Turn aside, friend, sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. 2 He took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. 3 Then he said to the closest relative, “Naomi, who has come back from the land of Moab, has to sell the piece of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech. 4 “So I thought to inform you, saying, ‘Buy it before those who are sitting here, and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if not, tell me that I may know; for there is no one but you to redeem it, and I am after you.’ ” And he said, “I will redeem it.” 5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.” 6 The closest relative said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, because I would jeopardize my own inheritance. Redeem it for yourself; you may have my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem it.” 7 Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange of land to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel. 8 So the closest relative said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” And he removed his sandal. 9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon. 10 “Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so that the name of the deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the court of his birth place; you are witnesses today.”

MESSAGE.

I. The Requirements of the Redeemer.

A. Had to be related.

B. Had to be able to pay the price.

C. Had to be willing.

5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.” 6 The closest relative said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, because I would jeopardize my own inheritance. Redeem it for yourself; you may have my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem it.”

the close relative would not redeem because he was afraid of marring his name.

His name is not even known.

God exalted Boaz for his willingness and now his name is the lineage of Jesus Christ.

II. The Fulfillment of the Redeemer.

A. Ruth let Boaz work on her behalf.

B. Boaz went sought out Ruth’s redemption.

C. Boaz redeemed Ruth.

III. The Rejoicing (celebration) of the Redeemer.

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in to her. And the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.

A. Marriage of the Ruth.

B. The Fruit of the Union.

Ruth 4:17 NASB95

17 The neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi!” So they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

son - Obed

Obed father of Jesses father of King David.

C. Ruth was changed.- new creation

Ruth a poor widow - marries Boaz and know everything he owns belongs to her.

CONCLUSION.

I. The Requirements of the Redeemer.

A. Must be related.

John 1:14 “14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Jesus became man.

B. Had to be able to pay the price.

Jesus’s blood is the required payment.

Matthew 26:28 “28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.”

Colossians 1:13–14 NASB95

13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Philippians 4:19 “19 And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

C. Must be willing.

Jesus was willing unto death.

8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

II. The Fulfillment of the Redeemer.

A. We must let Christ work on our behalf.

B. Christ stand in our place.

C. Christ redeemed us.

III. The Rejoicing (celebration) of the Redeemer.

A. Marriage of the Lamb.

Romans 8:16–18 NASB95

16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

We are co heirs with Christ.

Do we live in that?

B. The Fruit of the Union.

Fruit of the Spirit.

Fruit of sharing Christ - new Christians.

C. We are changed. - new creation.

2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95

17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Let us be ready for the Marriage of Lamb.

Revelation 19:7–8 NASB95

7 “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” 8 It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.
